Katy's on a mission, she really is
[MP3] Katy B - Movement
I have heard the voice of the future of British pop. God, with Jamie Woon and James Blake mixing soul and R&B with sparse electronica, and Katy B spinning her winning dance-pop, and hell throw Dan Black and Ellie Goulding in there, too, it is a bright future. BACK TO KATY B. She is wonderful. Her voice will appeal to the majority of ears and her lyrics are...

INFINITYTINIFNI
There’s this band called Radiohead, I don’t know if you’ve heard of them, but they recently put out a record called The King of Limbs and today (well, yesterday for them) they did a record-store special and gave out copies of a free newspaper called The Universal Sigh.
If you missed out on snagging yourself a copy, you can have a look at the paper here (right click save)....

Now that I know that I did not know you then
I don’t know about you all, but I’m already thinking of summer. It must be all the internships I’m applying for and the fact that my semester’s already winding to a close. My mind is already in June. (It’s a nice place for your mind to be, honestly.)
Anyway, few albums get the dreamy-hazy-lazy feel of summer’s heat better than Kings of Convenience’s...

On Lady Gaga, "Born This Way", "being oneself in...
(This sucks compared to the original, lost version but WHATEVER getting my thoughts out)
I hate “Born This Way”, you guys. I couldn’t even get into the Twin Shadow mix and I worship the ground that man walks on. (Admittedly, he does make me like the song more.)
While I know that a LOT has already been said/blogged/analyzed re this song, so far most of the points its...

Bad woman, mad woman? Really?
[MP3] Bruno Mars - Grenade (Passion Pit Remix)
Passion Pit contributes to sparkle-motion with a remix of Bruno Mars’s heavily played “Grenade”. The original version is all “I want to throw myself out the window, this girl doesn’t love me!” and this version is swagged out rave-party. I don’t even care that he has no business dancing to the sentiments...

Baby baby baby, where did our love go?
(by Ky Eliza)
I had a long post I was working on over a period of days about Gaga and female pop musicians, sort of a branching-off of all the discussion I saw about “Born This Way” and stuff I’ve been thinking for a while, but my browser crashed and I lost it all. God knows when I will be able to reproduce that essay. From now on, I’m writing up everything in Word first. IN THE MEANWHILE, have...

Jotting down some thoughts on race and indie...
This is the kind of stuff that gives indie culture a bad name. I could not get through that piece without rolling my eyes because its definition of INDIE versus OTHER culture has a blatantly racial element. So blatant that my use of “OTHER”ING in describing how he talks tackles mainstream intrusion into indie culture is apt.
Elitism in indie culture is nothing new. Privilege and...

Spring is on the way!

[MP3] Ra Ra Riot - Shadowcasting
There’s nothing like sprightly violin in a sweetish pop song to put some SPRING in your step, right? I’m not sorry for making that pun. I’m never sorry for puns. You’ll learn that about me.
This entire album is fantastic. I originally listened to it months ago when it was first released, being a big fan of their...

nostalgia, ULTRA
[MP3] Frank Ocean - We All Try
This track is so unbelievably smooth. As soon as it crackled to a start, my jaw dropped. I thought I found a voice that could signify the future of R&B. It just dropped in February, so I guess we’ll see, but man. His mixtape is just brilliant. It NAILS a sense of childhood nostalgia, complete with the sounds of cassette tapes being popped in and out of...

Formative Fridays: Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes
Every Friday I’d like to highlight an (older) artist or group that had an incredibly powerful, formative way with my listening habits and general music sensibilities. We’re talking Ultimate Emotional Impact. This week, what my mother passed on to me.
I remember when I was little how my mother cherished playing music her mother played when she was younger. My mother’s in her...

Like a Stereo Sun: Mix One
It’s time for An Emotional Reaction’s first official (well, not really, none of my shit is official per se) full-length mix. Unlike my short Emotions: Critical! mixes, this is unthemed. Or consider the theme “awesome music”.

Rai Knight - Without U
The travelling, organic Rai Knight gets compared to Nelly Furtado and Gwen Stefani, which is pretty apt, but I would say she’s quite an original. She calls her sound “hip hop pop”, I just call it awesome. There’s something in the Detroit water lately.
Download her complete album of demos at Bandcamp. You can also purchase a limited edition...
